About the Republic of Uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa, with a population of approximately 51.38 million as of 2025.

Its capital, Kampala, situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, is rapidly developing as the nation’s commercial and cultural hub. Uganda gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 and has since been governed as a presidential republic.

English and Swahili are used as official languages, and culturally, the country is rich in diversity, with more than 50 ethnic groups coexisting.

Agriculture is the main industry, while in recent years, growth has also been expected in sectors such as oil and gas, infrastructure development, and tourism.

  • With more than 70% of its population under the age of 30, Uganda’s youthful demographic structure serves as a driving force for future labor supply and economic growth.
  • While urbanization is progressing in cities such as Kampala and Mbarara, about 73% of the population still resides in rural areas, underpinning a strong agricultural base.
  • The country covers 241,000 square kilometers and, lying directly on the equator, offers diverse natural environments that are gaining attention as tourism resources.
  • Alongside its multicultural and multilingual background—including groups such as the Baganda and Banyankole—the nation is also advancing the formation of a shared national identity.
  • In addition to exports of agricultural products such as coffee and tea, increasing attention is being paid to tourism, infrastructure development, and oil resources.
